This species is native to Central America, from the Caribbean slopes of southern Nicaragua to extreme eastern Panama, and on the Pacific slopes from the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica to Colombia (Guyer and Donnelly 2005). It lives in lowlands, primarily rainforest (Caldwell and Summers 2003). It is a shy species, found deep in the forest interior (Leenders 2001).

In 1932, it was introduced to Oahu, Hawaii, as a means for mosquito control, and continues to occur there (McKeown 1978, 1996).

Size

Adult females ranging from 27.0-42.0 mm and adult males ranging from 25.0-39.5 mm

Life Span

They are known to have a life-span of eight years in captivity but it is much lower in the wild

Enclosure

A 10 gallon aquarium is suitable for 1-2 Dendrobates auratua. Auratus will not climb as much as other varieties of dart frogs, and prefer a horizontally oriented tank. Auratus seem to appreicate a water feature, such as a small pond.

Like most poison dart frogs, auratus prefer a humidity range of 70 – 100%, but can tolerate humidity down to 50% for short periods of time if the frogs have access to water. Low humidity levels, especially without access to water, can quickly be fatal to Dendrobates auratus. Auratus in particular seem to enjoy a wetter environment and higher ambient humidity levels vs other species of poison dart frogs, and will be more active in a more humid environment, especially when provided with a water feature. In the wild, auratus are commonly found in association with streams.

Heating & Lighting

They can tolerate a temperature range of 65 F to 85 F, but prefer temperatures in the low to mid 70s. Temperatures over 85F are dangerous

Diet

Like most poison dart frogs, Camo auratus poison dart frogs prefer smaller foods. All of the Green and Black auratus dart frogs will readily eat Drosophila melanogaster fruit flies. Adult Dendrobates auratus will readily consume Drosophila hydei fruit flies and pinhead crickets. All ages of poison dart frogs will enjoy springtails and isopods. All feeder insects should be dusted with a vitamin/mineral supplement.

Breeding

Coco hut or other covered area (bower), petri dish or other smooth surface

Courtship behavior is similar to that of D. tinctorius. Their call is a soft buzz and may or may not be heard outside the tank.

Breed best in pairs, but breeding does occur in groups. Egg eating may be a problem in breeding group with multiple females (female heavy groups especially) and/or groups not housed in large enough tanks. Courtship, egg care, and tadpole care are typical of the D. tinctorius species group. Tadpoles should not be fed exclusively algae based diets (not more than 50% of the diet). Metamorphs and froglets under 3 months, like D. tincs, are sensitive and should not be highly stressed but are not difficult, and should be raised individually or in groups of 5 or more. They will accept melanogaster FFs out of the water, and springtails are not necessary.
