The Callosciurus prevostii, known as Prevost's squirrel or tricolor squirrel, is one of the most colorful and visually striking rodents in the world. Its scientific name literally means "beautiful squirrel".

Main Characteristics

Vibrant Colors: It generally has a black back, a reddish-brown belly, and a white lateral stripe separating the two colors.

Abilities: They are excellent jumpers and spend most of their time in the treetops, rarely descending to the ground.

Activity: It is a crepuscular animal, being most active at dawn and dusk.

Habitat and Diet

Where it lives: Native to Southeast Asia, it can be found in Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo.

What it eats: Its diet is varied, including fruits (they love durian), nuts, seeds, flowers, and occasionally insects or bird eggs.

Ecological Role: They are fundamental to the forest, as they help in seed dispersal by dropping seeds far from the mother tree.

Interesting Facts

Communication: They have three different types of alarm calls to warn about predators.

Teeth: Like all rodents, their incisor teeth never stop growing, so they need to gnaw on hard materials to wear them down.

Conservation Status: Currently, it is not considered threatened, although it suffers from deforestation and capture for the pet trade.
