The guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) is a sociable, docile rodent native to the Andes region of South America. Despite the name, they are not pigs nor do they come from India.

Health and Biology

Teeth: They grow continuously and need constant wear through chewing hay.

Vitamin C: They do not produce it naturally and need supplementation via specific feed or fresh vegetables.

Life expectancy: They live, on average, between 5 and 8 years.

Communication: They emit various sounds, such as the characteristic "cui cui" to ask for food or express fear.

Ideal Diet

A balanced diet should follow this approximate proportion:

70% Hay: Essential for digestion and teeth. Should be available 24 hours a day.

20% Fresh Leafy Greens: Such as arugula, kale, and spinach (avoid lettuce, which can cause diarrhea).

5% Vegetables and Fruits: Carrots, bell peppers (rich in vitamin C), and fruits like apples (without seeds) as treats.

5% Feed: Species-specific feed to ensure micronutrients.

Environment and Coexistence

Companionship: They are group animals; it is recommended to have at least two of the same sex to avoid loneliness.

Space: They need spacious cages or enclosures, as they are very active (staying awake for about 20 hours a day).

Temperature: They are sensitive to extreme heat; ideally, keep them between 18°C and 25°C.

Basic Care

Hygiene: The enclosure should be cleaned frequently due to the high volume of urine and feces.

Bathing: Only in cases of extreme necessity and with appropriate shampoos, avoiding wetting the ears and face.

Attention: They need daily interaction to become tame and confident.
