The ferret is a carnivorous mammal of the mustelid family, the same as otters and weasels. Although it looks like a rodent, it is a natural hunter, domesticated for over 2,500 years to help control pests.

Characteristics and Behavior

Energy and Sleep: They are extremely active and curious animals when awake, but spend most of the day sleeping (between 14 and 20 hours).

Socialization: They are very intelligent, playful, and love interacting with their owners. They can live with dogs and cats, but require care around birds and rodents due to their hunting instinct.

Agile Body: They have an elongated and flexible body that allows them to enter very small spaces, which requires the house to be "ferret-proof" to prevent escapes or accidents.

Hygiene: They have a characteristic natural odor. Frequent baths are not recommended, as they can increase oil production on the skin and intensify the smell. Care and Feeding

Diet: As strict carnivores, they should eat specific rations with a high content of animal protein (at least 38%).

Health: The average life expectancy is 6 to 10 years. They need regular check-ups with veterinarians specializing in exotic animals.

Housing: Although they can stay in spacious cages when unsupervised, they need at least 2 to 3 hours of free exercise per day.

Legal Aspects

In Portugal: It is considered a companion animal (like dogs and cats), but requires a microchip, registration in the SIAC (Animal Identification and Registration System), and licensing at the parish council.
